What Is a Trial Update?

Trial update is the date that marks the end of data collection for a clinical study’s primary outcome measure, whether the study completed as prespecified or was terminated. For a clinical trial with multiple primary outcome measures, this is the date that marks the last participant examined or treated.

A new article type in JCO, clinical trial update provides a rigorous short form for disseminating updated results from previously reported trials. This article type aims to highlight additional important findings that may inform care, including secondary or tertiary end points that mature at different times (eg, pathologic response for metastatic disease is available long before progression-free survival data), and prespecified subset or ancillary analyses.
