Climate change has a significant impact on global weather patterns, one of which is increasing the frequency and intensity of floods. This phenomenon not only threatens human life, but also disrupts the ecosystem and economy. One of the main factors contributing to climate change is greenhouse gas emissions which cause the earth’s surface temperature to increase. One of the most obvious impacts of climate change is sea level rise. With the melting of polar ice and glaciers, sea water inundates coastal areas, which can cause flooding. Previously safe areas are now vulnerable, such as the cities of Bangladesh and Venice, which are battling increasingly severe waterlogging. In addition, increased rainfall in many areas is causing flash floods. Research shows that a warmer climate can increase the atmosphere’s capacity to hold water vapor, causing heavier rain in a short period of time. For example, heavy rains that occurred in Germany in 2021 caused enormous damage to infrastructure, causing economic losses reaching billions of euros. This condition is also exacerbated by deforestation and land use changes, which reduce the soil’s ability to absorb water. Therefore, areas experiencing deforestation are more vulnerable to flooding. Re-recruitment of vegetation is essential to maintain ecosystem balance and prevent flooding. Areas with poor infrastructure also face higher risks. Cities that do not have adequate drainage systems or efficient water management systems tend to experience more severe flood disasters. Additionally, rapid urbanization is leading to more hard surfaces, such as concrete, that hinder water absorption. Climate change is also affecting river flow patterns, causing faster and more unpredictable flows. Previously stable rivers can overflow in a short time, especially during heavy rain. Areas adjacent to large rivers, such as the Mississippi River in the United States, often experience flooding when rainfall exceeds the river’s capacity. The social impacts resulting from global flooding are enormous. Many communities lost their homes, access to clean water, and sources of livelihood, triggering population displacement. In the long term, this has the potential to create “climate refuge” areas where people will no longer be able to live in their home areas due to increased flood risks. Apart from that, public health is also threatened. Flooding increases the risk of airborne and vector-borne diseases, such as cholera and dengue fever, which can spread rapidly after a flood event. Poor hygiene as a result of flooding worsens the health situation in affected communities. There is no single solution to overcome the impacts of flooding due to climate change. However, mitigation strategies, such as water resource management and sustainable infrastructure development, are essential. Investing in good drainage systems and maintaining vegetation are critical steps to reduce the risk of future flooding. Overall, the impact of climate change on global flooding is very complex and requires attention and action from all levels of society. Strengthening policies related to the environment and social justice is the key to facing this challenge.
